As I stated in last month’s column, I would announce any winners of our essay applicants and, sorry to report, none were placed.  But again, would like to thank them for their entry and, as the saying goes, “There is always next year.”
In keeping up with our scholarship program, we had our club oratorical contest at La Mesa and the winner for the girls was, Paulina Cedillo , and for the boys, Matthew Chang.  Both of these fine youngsters compete in the next phase of the contest on April 21, and could go on to Bakersfield where the final competition will be held.  The theme for this contest was “How my Optimism Helps Me Overcome Obstacles.”  Second place went to Nataly Cervantes, third to Sarah Yoon, and honorable mention to Kristi Kim and Hannah Victor.  In the boys division, second place went to David Chang and third place was given to Alex Fernandez.
Once again these kids are all winners, just to be able to write and get up in front of an audience and speak takes a lot.  A special thanks to Jeremy Strauss for all his hard work and help with the contest.  To all our Junior High Schools out in our community perhaps next year we can get your school involved as well and give our youth a chance to win scholarship money.  A special thank you to our judges who came and helped as well.
I know that I repeat myself every time I write and this time is no different.  In order for our club to continue the work that we are doing we need members to come forth and join us.  We meet on the second and forth Wednesday of each month and would love to have you attend and meet and greet us.
Until next month.
