What in the world do beekeepers and honey and fathers have in common? They are all themed train rides offered at Fillmore & Western Railway Co in nearby Ventura County. Discover why bees are so essential to our economy and to agriculture. Bees make it possible for almond, avocado, citrus and many other fruits, nuts and veggies. The first annual Honey Harvest Festival is Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10 in Fillmore’s downtown Central Park.
The event will feature arts/crafts and food vendors, live entertainment both days, Frontier Gunfighters will be performing their skits, children activities and train rides each day that will take riders to Bennett’s Honey Farm for a behind-the-scenes tour of the honey processing plant. During the train trip there will be beekeepers on the sides of the tracks demonstrating how they calm the bees when they are extracting the honey from the bee boxes. At the event, there will be educational speakers informing the public about the important role bees play in our world.
On Sunday, June 17, kids bring your Dad’s, Grampa’s and of course, Moms and Grandma’s to the Father’s Day BBQ Lunch Train. The train departs at 11 a.m. and again at 3 p.m. Each train ride lasts approximately two and a half hours with a 40-minute stopover at the Loose Caboose Garden Center and Gift Emporium. Lunch will be served upon departure and consists of BBQ chicken and tri-tip, chili beans, potato salad, garlic bread, iced tea or coffee and dessert. Treat dad like the king of the family and celebrate onboard.
