Using guided imagery is a popular and an effective process for self healing and self improvement on a variety of issues. It can be used not only to facilitate the mind and body connection for improved health, but also for stress relief, attitude shifts, behavioral changes, and performance enhancement, just to name a few.
As a healing tool, there is nothing “new age” about using imagery. Throughout history from ancient Greek and Egyptian times, in shamanistic cultures across the globe, from Asia, through Europe, and to America, using the mind to improve or affect the body in a positive way has been in vogue for more than the last 20,000 years.
As imagery evokes the power of the imagination, it uses all of the senses, plus emotion, so that an inner landscape of experience occurs for the individual on an imagery journey. The brain, the mind, does not know the difference between fact and fantasy. Actual physiological responses have been documented from doing imagery, showing such things as reduced blood pressure and boosted immune response. A skilled imagery facilitator for one-on-one work may be helpful for deeper insights and discovery purposes, but much can be accomplished in imagery group work or with the self, alone.
Within this fast paced world, how about a time to stop, take a few deep breaths, allow the body to get comfortable and imagine being in a favorite place? The following folks did and notice what happened for them. A peak into the notebook of this imagery facilitator shows the following:
For about seven months, while in a series of chemotherapy treatments, a woman in her early 70s imagined the cancerous tumor shrinking. It helped to empower her. The tumor did shrink and successful surgery was performed. She is cancer free today and healthy.
A man in his 40s wanted to turn his business into the success he’d always dreamed of it being. That dream included moving into a beautiful new home. He did it by creating it all in his imagination, first.
A woman in her early 50s, who for years has been plagued with emotional duress of an unhappy childhood, finds peace at last from within, by doing imagery. Now she enjoys her happy life.
A young woman nearing 35 years old, stressed and frantic about trying to conceive, already with three failed pregnancies, finally learns to find tranquility by practicing her daily imagery exercises. The happy news of healthy pregnancy is now her reality.
Imagine that. The next success story could be yours by using guided imagery.
