Statistics tell us that most seniors will require some type of care as they age.  This care may be basic, such as help with cooking, shopping, and paying bills.  Or, it may be more advanced, such as bathing, incontinence care, and feeding.  Needing care and assistance is now commonplace as we all live longer.

Add stroke, dementia, and Alzheimer’s to the equation, and there is no doubt that more concentrated care and assistance will be required.  Statistics as well as common sense tell us that care needs typically increase – not decrease – with age.  Although many seniors are in “denial” and don’t want to think about their potential or increasing care needs, it is important to face the issue and have a plan.  Care is expensive.  Failing to plan is expensive.  What if one spouse wants to stay in the home, and the other spouse requires care in a skilled nursing facility?  Is this possible without going bankrupt?  The answer: yes – If there is a plan.  What if a senior’s care costs may exceed their income?  Is there help?  Very likely yes – but there should be a plan!

In-home caregivers, board and cares, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes all have a high price tag.  And the cost is not covered by medical insurance.  Have a plan.  That plan may include becoming eligible for VA Aid and Attendance benefits or Medi-Cal benefits.  It may mean asset protection, obtaining community resources, and making sure that trusted family members have proper legal authority to make decisions for the ill senior.  The plan should be your roadmap through the maze of long-term care issues that can, and often arise.
Do you have an 82 year-old parent who is living alone and still driving? Wonderful – what a dream!  But things certainly may change quickly and become a nightmare tomorrow.  Do you have a spouse that is now forgetful and getting worse?  There needs to be a plan to pay for the care, protect you as well as the assets, and to make decisions for the ill spouse legally.  Or are you a senior who is dealing with long term care issues?  Do you know all your options?  It is time to plan.
