A dedicated and long-time volunteer in the community will soon receive the coveted Silver Spur award from the College of the Canyons.
Rita Garasi, the 1990 Woman of the Year, will be this years recipient.

Dianne Van Hook, College of the Canyons Superintendent-President said, “Rita’s record of service speaks to her visionary leadership and selfless devotion to issues that benefit the entire community.  From supporting Santa Clarita’s city hood, to the performing arts, healthcare and education, Rita has lent her time, talents and resources to making the Santa Clarita Valley the wonderful place that it is.”

Garasi is honored by the recognition saying, “I believe the quality of a community and the quality of life is directly proportionate to the community’s involvement. Whether it is volunteering in the schools, at the hospital, on the drive for cityhood, or being a part of planning our new city, I feel I have been richly rewarded with so many amazing experiences and above all by the opportunity to work along side so many fine people.”

Garasi is a supporter of the University Center capital campaign, co-chair and manager on the College’s 2001 “Yes on Measure C” campaign, committee member on the Measure C Citizens Oversight committee for two terms, a current member of the COC Foundation and a member of the College’s Canyon Country Campus Advisory Committee.

The date and location for the annual Silver Spur Celebration gala is still to be determined.  Traditionally it has been held at historic museums, clubs and Los Angeles landmarks.
