Hard to believe that summer is almost gone, but before we know it school will be here and our club will be in full mode with all of our up and coming event’s.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the annual “Day for Kids” which takes place on September 22, at Newhall Park, from noon until 5 p.m. For those of you who have never had the opportunity to take part in this day, please make a point of coming out this year.
Everything is free for the kids, games, raffle prizes, food, and lots of craft booths for them to enjoy. Please stop by our booth, and watch the kids design crazy hats with the help of stickers, crayons, dry flowers and more.
With school around the corner it is time to start thinking about graduation, and where you will go after, hopefully many of you are thinking about college. Well we want to help, so now is the time to start thinking about scholarships. Through our Optimist International Foundation, there are two scholarships available. The Essay Scholarship of $2500 is awarded to an individual in each of the 52 district of Optimist International. The theme for this year’s essay “How Can I Help My Friends Realize Their Value.” The Oratorical contest theme is “Why Is My Voice So Important.” Students competing have to be under the age of 19 as of December 2012 and have not graduated from high school. For additional information please contact Dee at 661-252-7313.
For students entering Le Mesa JHS please remember to stop by the library and see about joining the Le Mesa Junior Optimist Club. This club has been around for several years. If you are a student at Golden Valley High School and wish to participate in the Golden Valley Junior Optimist Octagon please contact William Oh at 661-733-9972 for information. Both clubs participate in both school and community events.
I am looking for vendors to join us at our 60th Optimist Festival of Trees, which will be held on December 2, 2012 at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel. This is a one day event and space is limited, so if you are interested please call Dee at 661-252-7313.
Mark September 19 on your calendars, once again we are doing a fundraiser for “Light the Night” at Caruso’s Italian Restaurant, 18340 Sierra Highway in Canyon Country (661-251-8450). A portion of your bill will be donated to “Light the Night.” This applies to dine in and take out as well. See you there.
Until next month.
