At the time, she was a 25-year-old Santa Clarita resident who was diagnosed with a rare cancer called PNET or Ewing’s Sarcoma. She was a junior in film school at California State University of Northridge, when she began to experience severe ovarian cramps, It was a matter of months where the pain traveled to her upper abdomen. After numerous CT scans and ultrasounds, cysts on her ovaries were growing rapidly. In May of 2009, she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Doctors had removed some of the large tumor and damaged ovary and fallopian tube. Emily began chemotherapy and despite the difficult journey, she stayed positive and took an active role as a cancer advocate. She was involved with Stupid Cancer, the nation’s largest young adult cancer survivor advocacy group. Though based in New York, Emily partnered with Stacey Owens to establish a support group for local cancer survivors and patients.
Just last month, Emily lost her battle with cancer at the age of 28. We, at The Magazine of Santa Clarita would like to extend our condolences to her friends and family. She was a pleasure to work with and had a smile that lit up the room. Our hearts are heavy with sadness, but we are also so blessed that we were given the opportunity to share her story of hope and inspiration with others.
