On a personal note I would like to once again say thank you to all of you that sent cards, e-mails and good wishes on my husband Mike’s recent hospitalization.  He underwent chemo for the return of cancer and had to have some additional surgery.  He is now home and I am happy to report that he is doing well and is now cancer-free.

This month at our annual “Respect for Law” program we honored two outstanding recipients from our very own town.  First to be honored was Officer Bill J. Ward of the Newhall Highway Patrol.  Bill was accompanied by his wife Sandra and children, Wyatt and Alexandra.  Lt. Cassandra Trout, representing the Newhall Highway Patrol, presented an outstanding autobiography detailing Officer Ward’s career with the department and also told us about the tour of duty he did in Iraq.  Officer Ward is a hometown boy having grown up here and graduated from Saugus High School.  Next to be honored was 8 year old Master Daniel Fennessy, Jr. who took part in the life-saving rescue of his 17-month-old sister Brianna.  His baby sister had fallen into the family’s pool and as the mother, Robin jumped in to rescue her, Daniel quickly got on the phone and called 911.  Deputy Mike Johnson, from our own Sheriff’s Department, who happens to be a close family friend and the leader of Daniel’s Cub Scout Pack 577, was driving home and passed the area where the Fennessy’s live while the incident was occurring.

Deputy Johnson gave an account of the 911 tape and told us during the rescue call young Daniel never showed signs of being frightened; he related all the information needed to the operator and thus became a hero.  When I asked him where he learned to do this, he very proudly replied, “I learned this with my Cub Scout Pack 577.”
If interested please contact me or our web page for further instructions regarding our annual Essay and Oratorical contest which are in the works now.

For you students out there interested in doing community service, you can join a local Jr. Optimist club, there are two in the area.  Le Mesa has a Jr. Optimist Club and Canyon High School is starting an Octogan Club.

Also don’t forget to look for us at Lombardi Ranch and take a chance at our annual “Wheel of Fortune“ booth the weekend of October 12 and 13 and at the Sheriff’s Haunted House on October 28, where once again we’ll have the wheel in addition to some delicious culinary food for you to buy and enjoy. Until then,  Dee
