My husband and I were blessed with the birth of our son, Joshua Golshani, on July 10. Like most expectant parents, we prepared for our bundle of joy by doing things such as decorating the nursery, buying a layette, partaking in a baby shower, selecting baby names and purchasing a stroller.
Unlike most parents, we also established a comprehensive estate plan that protects and provides for our son should something happen to us. Oftentimes, young parents get caught up in the fun details of parenthood and forget to plan for the unexpected.
If you are the parent of a baby, ask yourself: if I were to be involved in a car accident that left me in a coma, would it matter more if my baby nursery is color-coordinated or if I have designated the person of my choice to care for my child when I am unavailable?
Parenthood is a joyous time and parents should enjoy their babies to the fullest. But parents should not forget to address the more serious aspects of parenting that include planning for and protecting your child should something happen to you.
By properly nominating guardians for your children in a legal document, you can prevent your children from ever ending up in the wrong hands. By establishing a living trust as a receptacle for your child’s inheritance, you can ensure that only trustworthy people that you choose, manage your children’s assets until they are old enough to do so themselves.
Planning for the unexpected is one of the greatest gifts of love you can give your children this holiday season.
