We are born to love, but eventually we learn to fear. In October kids gleefully don superhero masks and costumes on Halloween. Adults swapped superhero masks for others. ‘Trick-or Treat’ becomes ‘I’ll be happy if only’ – if only I lose 10 pounds, if only my bills were paid or I worked harder and longer, my children could have more.
‘If only’ perpetuates fear. We fear failure or consequences from past choices. During good times, ‘if only’ becomes ‘what if’, teaching our children that other things control our happiness; when we’re rich or thin, then we’ll be happy. Remember that you are in charge of your own happiness. We are so busy negating our fears, we’ve forgotten that which brings joy and happiness. Financial concerns or keeping up with the Joneses distracts us from our dreams, blurring our personal picture of true fulfillment.
Fear affects relationships with friends and family, in work and even play. We rarely let others glimpse behind our mask and by hiding behind it we are unable to be ourselves. With pasts focused on the negative and the positives overlooked, old beliefs created masks obstructing us from daily contentment.
When asked ‘what is your favorite day?’ can you answer ‘today?’ By learning to stay present and enjoy the moment we rediscover that which brings us joy. Don’t wish your life away with ‘if-only’, make today your favorite day. Remove the mask, proudly show off your authentic self, and see things more clearly.
As a life coach I can help you develop tools to wash away the mask, leave the old beliefs behind, and enhance the positive every day. Start teaching your children through your own acts of kindness and watch the stress dissipate. Stress feeds fear and as we release the stress, we shed our masks. You get back what you put out; if you are ready to succeed and learn to live for today, then let’s get started. Shed that mask and start living authentically in the present.
Thank you for being a big part of my life. I will be away from the magazine, but will return again soon. Blessings to all – Liz.
