“Don’t Be Fooled: Not All Yogurts Are Created Equal” – That article headline on the National Yogurt Association’s website aboutyogurt.com really caught my attention, and it should catch yours as well. One sentence particularly caught my eye: “But yogurt-lovers should take notice: there are products in the marketplace that take advantage of yogurt’s healthful image, but that do not contain live and active cultures.”
In our 16-month research of every yogurt store we could find in Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita, we found several that did not even know about the NYA, much less the guidelines and minimum standards they set forth regarding minimum levels of Live & Active Cultures; and in several cases, thereby most likely not even meeting the standards that would qualify what they were serving as even being called ‘yogurt.’ After this realization sank in, and after researching several national brands, we decided to sign on with Dannon. After meeting with their reps and learning the stats on their frozen yogurt line (including Non-Dairy Sorbets) we realized the incredibly high-quality of everything in Dannon’s YoCream line, and felt proud to be able to offer their products in our new venture in Valencia. We’re qualified to display the NYA’s Live & Active Cultures Seal…the “LAC Seal.”
The NYA article states: “The seal is a voluntary identification available to all manufacturers of refrigerated yogurt whose products contain at least 100 million (108) cultures per gram at the time of manufacture.” The NYA article also states, “Its purpose is to sponsor health and medical research for yogurt with live and active cultures and serve as an information source to the trade and the general public.”
In addition, Dr. William Sears, UCI, and author of over 30 books on childcare, states, “1) Yogurt is easier to digest than milk. 2) Yogurt contributes to colon health. 3) Yogurt is an excellent source of protein and calcium! 4) Yogurt can lower cholesterol. 5) Yogurt can decrease yeast infections. 6) Yogurt aids in healing after intestinal infections.”
So, after all is said, the research clearly shows that “true” yogurt is unquestionably a much healthier choice as a frozen dessert than the general public realizes. We at planet yogurt are proud to offer the finest yogurt available in Santa Clarita Valley.
