NASCAR Busch Series was about to give us its best. You could smell the burning gasoline as soon as we arrived at the area to pick up our tickets. Did we ever feel so special as we got to hop on to the golf car and got a ride to the VIP section at the inner circle of the track. Tracking down the Sport Clips sponsored GEICO racing team #7 was fun as we walked by team after team, up close and personal, curiously checking out all the interesting car racing equipment, until arriving at our team spot.
It was a treat to get to meet the driver, Mike Wallace, along with the entire team and have a chance to take a close look at what the races are about. We were standing in the pit at the track as the cars were placed in their spots right before the start. Mike stepped in to his car and we moved out of the way. Squishing those tiny orange earplugs to ensure that we could hear something after the race the cars started their engines and you could really feel the excitement of the entire speedway.
Going around the two-mile long track with speeds up to 180 mph only takes about 40 seconds. They are fast and you could hear them coming around the corner. The engines were at throttle and it was awesome, the feeling was quite incredible when you are actually physically there. We had our share of listening in on the inside radio where you got the scoop of the instructions, go high/low, who is in front of you/behind you or when to stop for a pit. Interesting stuff as we got to witness the pit stop protocol. It still amazes me how fast the team operates.
Eventually the race came to an end after over hundred laps and we had unforgettable time at the pit stop, taking it all in, enjoying ourselves and learning something new about the world of auto racing.
It was a unique happening to have the “GEICO #7 show car” stop by Sport Clips store a few weeks ago. Many came to take a look and got their picture taken right by the car. It was a treat many people hope to see again in SCV.
