Prosthetic dentistry is a very exacting and difficult specialty. The specialty is labor intensive and requires an artist’s eye to create each unique set of dentures. As a result, very few practices provide such services. Although dentistry has made tremendous advances with technology for implants, crown and bridge work, there has been very little change in the removable prosthetics (i.e.) for the denture wearer for the past 70 years. Poorly fitting dentures can cause long-term health problems and annual check ups are strongly encouraged. Routine check ups are very important to maintain proper fitting dentures. A loose denture makes chewing and talking difficult and can change facial features and cause irritation, sores or infections. Dentures should be replaced every three to five years. A proper evaluation will determine what modifications will be necessary to maintain a proper vertical alignment. People who wear dentures for more then five years will have usually worn down their back teeth. This will affect your chewing ability and after a long period this will have a significant effect on your digestive system and also causing misalignment in the TM joint, which may result in serve pain in the neck, shoulders and back. Oral hygiene is very essential when wearing dentures, just like natural teeth, dentures and gums must be properly cared for. Massaging the gums with a toothbrush or a clean cloth is highly recommended to keep the tissues healthy and clean. Every denture or partial denture wearer should always be check at least once a year for oral cancer screening to prevent future diseases.
