This is a tale that we want to believe in. Santa Clarita residents are in for a real treat! This holiday season, the iconic 1947 film, Miracle on 34th Street will be brought to life onstage at the Canyon Theatre Guild. In this perennial holiday favorite, a cynical little girl named Susan meets a funny old man named Kris Kringle, who claims to be Santa Claus.
Susan has been taught Santa doesn’t exist, but is drawn to the charming and loveable old fella. When her mother, Doris Walker, hires Kris as the Macy’s holiday Santa and he comes to stay with their neighbor, Fred Gayley, Susan begins to question this disbelief.
After all, Mr. Kringle is the personification of good will and holiday spirit. As Macy’s holiday Santa, he’s just as gentle, loving, and magical as all would have him be, and he enchants children and shoppers. Kris eventually wins Susan over and we watch her blossom into a caring, happy child. But – oh, no! Because of a contemptuous Macy’s vocational counselor plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. A small girl’s belief in Santa and the magic of the holiday is at stake in a climactic courtroom decision. In the end, this formerly cynical child and the funny old man named Kris Kringle teach a cold, materialistic world that yes, there really is a Santa Claus!
Miracle on 34th Street is a tale that we want to believe in.
