Santa Clarita residents, are you ready for a holiday miracle? This holiday season, the Canyon Theatre Guild will bring the iconic 1947 film, Miracle on 34th Street to life onstage. In this enduring holiday favorite, a cynical little girl named Susan meets a funny old man named Kris Kringle, who claims to be Santa Claus. Susan has been taught that the jolly old man doesn’t exist, but is drawn to the charming and loveable fella. When her mother, Doris Walker, hires Kris as the Macy’s holiday Santa and he becomes Susan’s neighbor, she gets to know this kind and funny old gentleman – and she begins to question her disbelief.
Kris eventually wins Susan over and we watch her blossom into a caring, joyous child. But – oh, no! Because of a disdainful Macy’s vocational counselor plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. A small girl’s belief in Santa and the magic of the holiday is at stake in a climactic courtroom decision. In the end, this formerly cynical child and the funny old man named Kris Kringle teach a cold, materialistic world that yes, there really is a Santa Claus and that the holiday season is not about how much and many. It’s about generosity of spirit, graciousness and caring for others, traits that always reward us heartily.
