To understand the calendar, you must understand the event. The “Advent” has been celebrated by “Western Christians” for 150 or more years. The tradition began in Germany (as have many Christmas traditions) and celebrates the “coming” of the birth of Jesus. The importance of the event led many Christians to believe the celebration should be much more than a one-day celebration and the Advent begin. In days past it began on the 4th Sunday preceding Christmas Day and lasted thru Christmas Eve.
The Calendar was not the first method of celebration or the marking off of the days. Originally, those who celebrated the Advent would put a chalk mark on their door for each day. The practice of lighting candles followed along with hanging small pictures or scriptures on the walls. There are also Advent Clocks. In the late 19th Century the mother of Gerhard Lang presented him with a piece of cardboard that had 24 precious candies stuck to it. Every year Gerhard waited with anticipation for his mother’s gift and he was inspired to present this to others in printed form. In 1908 the traditional printed calendar that we know today was born.
