The California fires have impacted so many of us. The uncertainty of the direction, the rapid nature in which the fire spread, the homes that were lost or damaged. Why did this happen? How can we feel safe again? These are all question and concerns of those who were evacuated, those who lost their homes and those who were impacted by the media coverage. The empathy felt for others, knowing it was possible that we could be someone who lost our home can be heart wrenching as well.
The best thing one can do to take care of themselves is surrender to the unknown and let go. This is no easy task. In order to do this, we must go through a process of feeling the emotions, grieving the loss and looking for the lessons that are underneath it all. Seeing how the community comes together in times of disaster is one way to feel that you are not alone.
Realizing this fire started on a Sunday, not a “work day” when more residents could have been away having to battle the freeway traffic to come home and pack at least a few belongings or get pets, is another. There was a woman on television being interviewed after she lost her home and said, “Well, this is an adventure that I wasn’t planning for, but nonetheless it is an adventure.”
Reframing situations with hope, faith and belief that something better will come is a foundation of recovery. Trying to figure out the why is wasted energy. If a reason doesn’t come through your mind in an instant, let it go. Life is too precious to stay in the “why” energy. Gratitude for life, support from others, bringing back to basics what really matters in life, these are all ways of using the positive energy of a situation.
Sometimes it takes a situation like this for people to take inventory, inventory of their lives, their possessions, their way of living and reflect and see what is truly important. Live in the moment and make it work for the greater good of your own life. You can and do create your reality. You have the power to let go and be free from figuring out the why.
