Nestled among the hills of Canyon Country you will find a treasure sitting atop one such hill. Leona Cox Community School is part of the Sulphur Springs Union School District and this year the school is celebrating their 50th anniversary. Leona Cox is a TK-6 grade school including special needs preschool thru first grade.
From its very inception, this school has been a staple of the community. Leona H. Cox, for whom the school is named for, used to walk to the well and bring water to the school children. Today, the school is named for her and a painting of her hangs in the MPR.
Technology has come far since the early days and now offers so many wonderful opportunities for the students. Classrooms have two SmartBoards, multiple iPads, laptops, and a HoverCam. Students have been taught how to use various programs in order to enhance learning. The fifth and sixth graders are also using ChromeBooks in class for a variety of different experiences. Leona Cox has also incorporated Coding inside the regular school day and is offering an afterschool class.
The community around Leona Cox is very special. The families have provided countless hours of volunteering and local businesses have given the students incentives for receiving awards monthly. The school has been involved in many community based need projects such as, Project Linus, donating to the food pantry, and recycling. The very supportive PTA has strong leadership!
On February 25, Leona Cox had a special birthday party in honor of the school’s 50 years. The staff and students were so excited to have this very special event at Leona Cox. The event began at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25. There were speakers both adult and student, spirit wear orders were taken. Also, no birthday is complete without “cake,” so our cupcakes serve multiple purposes. This birthday was one that the children will not forget.
