There are a variety of different learning environments. Two of them are the online environment (also known as E-learning), and the collaborative environment (also known as group learning). The collaborative technique has students working
in groups to master objectives. The online technique offers students a more “transparent” way of learning – one where the student can see and hear the entire learning experience.
In cooperative learning environments, the teacher’s role changes from the person who imparts knowledge to her students, to the person who is a resource of information that can be utilized during group learning. Research suggests that cooperative learning increases students’ self-esteem and affects the brain. Unlike whole-class or individual seatwork, cooperative learning groups provide the best opportunities for students to share their ideas and opinions. Students practice asking for and giving help, talking through a problem before coming up with the final solution, and understanding other points of view.
In the past, some E-learning courses were found to be more boring than their physical classroom counterparts. More students also received lower grades, or dropped the online courses altogether. But many authorities on E-learning have found several solutions to the dullness of past online courses. Adding accreditation, transferability, wikis, graphics, and improvements to the online student community have improved E-learning dramatically. The timing of a professor’s response to a query can also affect how well students do in the class. A professor who is easily accessible by phone, email, or instant message makes students feel more comfortable and gives them more opportunities for feedback.
