But a better beginning is to add a splash of romance, an evil villain, and a spunky heroine, and you set the perfect stage for a fairy tale ballet sure to delight summer adventurers of all ages. On Saturday, June 13, join the Santa Clarita Ballet Company at the College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center for its debut performance of a perennial favorite, Little Mermaid, and prepare to be amazed.
Under the artistic direction of Pamela Sosa, Little Mermaid features original choreography that puts a fresh spin on the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale. Through dazzling ballet, performed by Santa Clarita Ballet Company’s most advanced ballerinas and professional guest dancers, the story of everyone’s favorite mermaid’s determination to win the heart of her handsome prince glitters and shimmers across the stage.
As the Little Mermaid celebrates her 15th birthday with her beautiful sisters, an array of swirling fish, crabs, and oysters, performed by members of the Santa Clarita Ballet Academy, drift across the stage in elaborately designed costumes that undulate and float in a spectacle of vibrant Mediterranean hues, shimmering like pirate’s treasure and setting the tone for the show’s steady flow of visual decadence.
Dynamic set design featuring a full-scale ship and the rich resonance of composer Benjamin Britten’s well-known compositions propel the plot. As the mermaid’s determination to win the heart of her prince drives her to strike a dangerous deal with the nasty Sea Witch, she finds herself on land, adjusting to new legs. There she is whisked into the Prince’s realm and greeted with a celebration of sparkling princesses, jesters, and court musicians eager to welcome the lovely mermaid. But can the mermaid make her prince understand that his heart belongs to her before the Sea Witch collects on their bargain? Join Santa Clarita Ballet Company on June 13 to find out.
