Carols are being sung, lights are shining and the mall parking lot is constantly packed… this could only mean one thing, the holidays are here! For some that comes with a groan, as the search begins for those perfect gifts. For others, there is joy and anticipation for traditions and time with family and friends. Whatever the holidays mean for you, it is usually a busy time for everyone. With all the bustling and preparing for parties, family reunions, and get-togethers, here are some helpful tips on creating warmth in your home this holiday season.
Lighting – Adding some soft lights in strategic areas of each room will create ambience and add warmth to any room. Try placing some candles on tables, shelves or counter tops for a delightful glow. There are also no-flame candles now available if you are concerned with live fire. Another way to add tasteful lighting is with white twinkling lights, the smaller the better. Putting strands of these lights around windows (especially lovely behind sheer curtains), around the top of a room, or gracing a large piece of furniture will add that special holiday feel to every room. Keep in mind that more is not always better. Keep it simple and elegant.
Scents – For many people, the holidays are associated with certain smells such as pumpkin pie, gingerbread, cinnamon, pine trees, or perhaps Aunt Marge’s perfume. Whatever your favorite holiday scents may be, share them with all who enter your home. Scented candles are a perfect way to not only add light, but scent as well. Or try using holiday sprays to fill a room with that special fragrance. Place a holiday dish filled with potpourri on a table to add scent and visual warmth. Again, remember that less is more. Be consistent in the smells you choose, often combining fragrances can be a turn off for guests.
Color – Want more than a few twinkling lights and the aroma of pie? Adding splashes of color to your home should do just the trick. Place bold holiday colors and designs throughout your home with accent pillows, special throw blankets, or festive centerpieces. And do not forget the walls! Wow your guests with an accent wall of faux finishing. Whether it is painting the whole room, or just an accent wall, a fresh coat of paint can change the dynamics of a room in a dramatic way that will last beyond the holiday season.
