California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) has prepared two free guides for long-term care consumers: “Visitation Rights in California Health and Long Term Care Facilities” and “Your Right to Leave”, a guide for battling forced placement in Long-Term Care Facilities.

Many family members have faced exclusion by primary caregivers from being able to visit with their loved one based upon that person’s representation they were excluded from visitation.  The CANHR guide helps to explain the rights residents of skilled nursing facilities have to receive visitors and the rights family members have to visit with residents.  They also explain the rights of visitation in Residential Care Facilities.  Explanation of the purpose of Long-term Care Ombudsman and how to contact them when needing assistance is included in this guide.
The newest guide “Your Right to Leave”, explains the rights of long-term care consumers to be free from false imprisonment.  At times, residents are illegally held in nursing homes or assisted living facilities against their will despite no judicial decision or legal process.  This guide helps to explain how and why this happens and explains the resident’s rights to be free from forced placement, giving guidance on remedies.
California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform’s website can be accessed at http://canhr.org/publications/index.htm.  This is a good website and resource for all California consumers.
