Detoxification is a treatment made popular because toxins have become a part of our everyday lives. To compound the problem of our toxic environment, we have refined away much of the nutritional value of our food supply, replacing it with artificial colorings, preservatives, flavorings and conditioners, alcohol and smoking. This poor quality diet, combined with extensive use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture, may have predisposed many of us to experience a kind of “internal” pollution. Internal pollution occurs when unhealthful bacteria overcome the healthful bacteria in the intestinal tract.
These unhealthful bacteria release toxic byproducts into our circulation that can negatively impact many aspects of our overall health. To avoid toxicity, it is very important to eat a diet with plenty of fresh, wholesome foods. Avoid excessive food, alcohol, smoking, fat, refined sugar, additives and preservatives. It is best to eat moderate levels of complex carbohydrates. Substitute organically raised animals, fruits and vegetables whenever possible. A current approach to detoxification is to nourish the body thoroughly, fueling its natural detoxification mechanism with the nutrients provided from healthy foods needed to achieve optimal detoxification activity. The body gets what it needs to prevent muscle and organ breakdown and depleted energy resources, but that is just the beginning. Extra nutrients, besides those found in foods, are needs to support the function of the organs directly involved in detoxification.
The intelligent application of nutrition must be supplemented. I provide my patients with custom herbal formulations, prepared to meet each individual’s specific requirements, along with acupuncture, for detoxification of the body.
The following can be achieved with acupuncture, herbs, and proper nutrition. Provide a strong, intact barrier in the intestines to promote elimination of toxins through regular bowel movements and elimination of buildup of microorganisms and internal toxins, and leakage of toxic materials from the intestines into the circulation, to filter out and transform toxic substances that have entered the blood into harmless substances that can be excreted in the urine. This helps to maintain a healthy kidney to provide a major route of toxin excretion via the urine and to eliminate excess fat which provides a ready storage site for fat-loving toxins entering the body.
