There are a lot of myths about aging, three of which are the worst because they can keep us from aging successfully.

Myth one: To be old is to be sick.  Yes, the risk of developing a chronic illness or disability is higher as we age, but despite limitations, most seniors are able to adapt and to live independently for a very long time.

Myth two: You can’t teach an “old dog” new tricks.  That’s silly.  The brain doesn’t deteriorate as we age.  In fact it retains a high degree of what’s called neuroplasticity, which is the ability to learn new things, even in advanced age.

Myth three: It’s too late for positive action.  In fact, it’s never too late.  Adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors can pay off, no matter what your age.  That means that with the new year on this very day, you can stop growing old and start aging well, and with wisdom.  Here are some new year’s resolutions that should help.

Resolution one: start walking and moving because exercise is everything!  Use very light weights or even a soup can to exercise your arms and build your upper body strength.  Stretch and move your legs and feet for increased lower body strength and improved flexibility.  If you don’t know what to do, ask your doctor.  He or she can give you simple range of motion exercises to help keep your body healthy.  If you’re afraid of falling, ask for balance exercises that can help you feel more secure.

Resolution two:  keep your attitude positive.  Focus on what you have now, not what you’ve lost.  Keep your brain active with reading and music.  If your eyesight is fading and you can no longer read, contact the National Braille Library Services in Los Angeles at 323-660-3880 and get their free talking books.  The books come with an easy to use tape player that could also be used for music tapes.

If your vision isn’t a problem, learn something new by taking a class, work on puzzles or keep a journal.  You might be surprised just how many people would be interested in knowing more about your life and experiences, maybe even your family members.

Resolution three: don’t let chronic health issues keep you from enjoying your senior years.  Be proactive in working with your doctors to make sure you’re getting the information and, if necessary, the medications you need to help you age successfully.
