Time Warner Cable and the Cable Hope Fund presented a check for $10,000 to the Santa Clarita Valley Disaster Coalition at the Santa Clarita City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. The donation supports the on-going assistance efforts for Santa Clarita Valley families impacted by the October 2007 wildfires.
Formed in 2004 after torrential rains and flooding in the Santa Clarita Valley and again in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, the Santa Clarita Valley Disaster Coalition (SCVDC) has been lauded by the City of Santa Clarita and other local agencies as the best resource for collecting and dispensing relief funds and gift cards to those who have suffered loss as a result of a natural disaster or community-wide emergency. One hundred percent of the donations benefit victims; the SCV Disaster Coalition has no administrative fees or overhead costs.
“This response for the benefit of the community has been made possible through the auspices of the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging Corporation, a nonprofit agency that primarily serves the needs of the elderly and disabled. Our staff is skilled in both assessment criteria and community resource management and it seemed natural for us to assist in these efforts and act as the charitable cognizant agency,” said Brad Berens, Executive Director of the SCV Committee on Aging/Senior Center.
Time Warner Cable has been providing telecommunication services to Santa Clarita Valley residents for nearly 15 years. Debi Picciolo, LA North Division President for Time Warner Cable commented, “The Time Warner Cable family is integrated at so many different levels with this community that when so many of our customers and employees were affected by last October’s fires, we immediately felt the need to help out in a meaningful manner. We reached out to the Cable Hope Fund and we are thrilled that this organization was selected to be a grant recipient.”
Similar to the SCVCOA and the SCVDC efforts, the Cable Hope Fund, a non-profit corporation, was founded by the National Cable Telecommunications Association on behalf cable operators nationwide in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, and serves as the cable industry’s disaster relief organization.
“Cable operators and networks have a strong presence in Southern California, and some employees and their families — unfortunately — have been directly affected by this disaster. Our industry feels a strong commitment to the communities we serve in Southern California, and we want to help the many families that are coping with the effects of the 2007 wildfires,” said David Pierce, Executive Director of the Cable Hope Fund, and Vice President, Public Affairs, NCTA.
