American Cancer Society SCV Unit News
Fighting for a future with less cancer and more birthdays, the American Cancer Society SCV Unit is hosting two events in our neighborhood.
November 14: Ho-Ho-How to Ring in the Holidays and Support Relay
The gift-giving spirit of the holiday season will help fight cancer on Saturday, November 14 when the American Cancer Society SCV Unit holds its Annual Relay For Life Holiday Boutique. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Santa Clarita Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, the boutique will offer: beautiful handcrafted cards; sea glass jewelry; quilts; table runners; decorative signs; children’s dance costumes; high fashion clothing; scarves; hats; jewelry and healing hearts; toys; homemade jams, jellies, and breads; and more. Proceeds from the festive bazaar benefit Relay For Life, the ACS’ annual team-walking fundraiser. Funds help the ACS provide free information and services to people battling cancer, as well as prevention education and scientific research, which has led to many critical discoveries, successful treatments, and lives saved.
For further holiday boutique information, contact Kathleen Pavard at SpecialEvents@SCVRelay.org or call 661-755-4342. Santa Clarita Methodist Church is located at 26640 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus.
November 19: Kicking Butts with the Great American Smokeout
It stinks. It’s expensive. It’s the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. Despite such grim smoking facts, 42 million Americans continue to light up. Enough already!
To better educate people about the hazards of smoking, and ultimately help smokers kick the habit, the ACS holds its annual Great American Smokeout the third Thursday in October. The Official Sponsor of Birthdays, ACS urges smokers to give up all forms of tobacco, including vape sticks, for at least that one day – then hopefully for their lifetime.
“Stopping smoking exponentially lowers the risk of lung cancer. Call the ACS to find out ways to stop smoking and vaping and have healthier lungs, recommends Nancy Coulter, ACS SCV Leadership Council President and 25-year ACS volunteer.
“The American Cancer Society is here for everyone,” she said. “Please call or come in to see what we can do to help you help yourself avoid cancer. All of us working together will one day bring about a cancer-free world.”
For Smokeout information and ACS stop-smoking resources and tools, call 800-227-2345 or visit www.Cancer.org/smokeout.
To learn about the ACS’ many programs, services, and research efforts, visit www.cancer.org, or contact the ACS SCV office at 661-298-0886 option 3. You can visit the office at 25020 Avenue Stanford #170, Valencia. The ACS is “open” for answers 24/7 at 800-227-2345.
