The power of the mind is not a gimmick. Just ask John Stevens. Mr. Stevens is a Vietnam vet who in 1986 completed the New York Marathon, a task that can be a high level of accomplishment in any person’s life. However, what makes his story unique and a great motivation for many others is that John Stevens has no legs. He completed the marathon using his hands, arms and torso — it took him four days. When asked how he did it he simply said, “I always believed that I could,” he added, “I saw myself doing it…finishing.”
John’s story continues to motivate others because it seems he has every right to believe he is limited. But in fact, his beliefs are not limiting. He looks at his world and says, “I can!” Many of us have limiting beliefs and ungoverned behaviors that may be getting the best of us. We may not even realize that we are in the habit of looking at ourselves and our world in the same way, so that even when we try to change it we go back to our old behaviors and old ways of thinking. Self-sabotage is perhaps the most dangerous element in keeping us from achieving our goals.
Our limiting beliefs, habits and behaviors are seated in our subconscious mind. A client named Sara shares: “I’ve tried every diet plan out there and have tried to keep the motivation for working out. But it’s always temporary. It wasn’t until working subconsciously with hypnotherapy and doing creative visualizations that I started to see myself differently, my self-image, self-esteem and all aspects of my life. Positive visualizing and affirming during hypnosis has become cemented in my mind so now my mind believes it! It’s more automatic. I’ve never felt this kind of will power or motivation before and it’s now easier not to struggle against myself.”
The power of our minds is immeasurable; it is only limited by our beliefs. And just like John Stevens we are all able to access that power to achieve whatever we desire. Nothing is impossible; John Stevens knows and proved that. One of the greatest minds in history, Albert Einstein, said it best, “What the mind can conceive it can also achieve.”
