Some nurse practitioners choose to have extra training in the individualized needs of women; as such we are trained to listen to the individual. We promote understanding, gentle physical exam, and alternatives in health care. Specializing in women’s care, we feel that you best know your health care needs and will work together with you to meet those needs. The nurse practitioner’s philosophy of individualized care encourages a women’s participation in health care decisions. The collaboration between a woman and her nurse practitioner provides the time it takes to answer all of her questions.
The history of women’s health demonstrates its evolving complexity. Today women are recognized as having unique health issues. Many aspects of women’s health are now in the forefront of women’s healthcare such as cardiovascular disease, menopause, urinary incontinence, and preventative care. There are many milestones throughout a woman’s lifespan and during each stage there are specific healthcare issues associated with these milestones. Your practitioner can help you pass through these milestones by providing compassionate individualized care.
We use a multidisciplinary approach to women’s healthcare needs by integrating historical, sociocultural, biophysical and psychosocial aspects of a woman’s life. Both conventional and complementary therapies are supported to assist a woman through all phases of her lifespan from puberty, through pregnancy and menopause. Suggested modalities of care may include behavioral therapy, medicinal therapy such as bioidentical hormones or surgical interventions.
Health care priorities for the nurse practitioner are that of prevention, wellness and education. The practitioner will help you learn about your body and the focus of care will be that of wellness as well as illness. Nurse practitioners are sensitive to the woman’s needs and increased communication and education will decrease the mystery surrounding health care. Education may include disease prevention, treatment therapies and goals, or wellness behaviors. Nurse practitioners serve as an advocate who will help you make informed decisions regarding your healthcare. For the practitioner the goal of care is to optimize your quality of life.
