As Spring returns to Southern California, people are jumping into their pools and spas.  Here is a brief list of things to properly care your pool and spa:
Clean the skimmer and pump basket daily.  This allows the pumps and filters to operate more effectively, reducing energy consumption.

Check your water chemistry more frequently.  Winds carry a lot of dirt, debris and spores.  These can cause algae blooms if the water chemistry is not properly maintained.

Clean around your equipment area.  Trim back bushes that are within four feet of your heater’s exhaust vent.
Backwash your filter regularly.  This will ensure the system remains efficient (saving electricity and money).
Maintain your water level.  The hot, dry winds can easily create water loss each day.  If the pool is not filled on a consistent basis, the water level can drop below the tile line.  This exposes your plaster resulting in cracking and peeling.

If you are thinking about building a pool, meet with a reputable pool designer who can help you take maintenance and operation issues into account before building your pool.
