So, you are driving down the freeway on your way back from work, in traffic.  Suddenly the traffic in front of you comes to a stop.  You stop with no problem, but you soon realize that the person behind you is not coming to a stop.  You have just been rear-ended.  Now what?
Here are the “ins” and “outs” of what to do anytime you are involved in a motor vehicle accident:

• First, check to see that all parties are okay.

• Call 911.  Remember that even a minor accident can cause injury.  Never assume that you are not injured just because there is little or no damage to your car.  Seek professional care immediately.

• Exchange insurance and contact information with other driver(s).

• If a paramedic suggests you go to the emergency room, don’t decline, go.  You may be suffering from shock and may be unable to properly judge the situation.  Even the smallest fracture in your spine can be very serious!  If you don’t head to the Emergency Room go to your primary care doctor or an urgent care facility to be checked.

See your local chiropractor for a checkup. Remember, muscle aches, soreness, headaches and other symptoms associated with your injuries may not show up until days after the accident.  Chiropractors specialize in injury treatment for muscles, nerves and joints and can help the healing process along.

Draw a picture of the accident while it is fresh in your mind, list all important factors to the accident including if the other person was running a light, speeding, talking on a cell phone, etc.  Studies show that ice applied immediately to the injured area will help keep swelling and pain to a minimum.
