The sun is warm, the rains have ceased, and the birds are singing joyfully in the pink-budded trees.  This could only mean one thing, Spring has finally arrived in full force.  As you revel in the loveliness of the season, there are several things to keep in mind regarding the maintenance of your home.
First of all, there are some things that should be checked every year.  Smoke detector and flashlight batteries should be checked and/or changed for your continued safety.  You may also want to change various filters such as air conditioners, refrigerator, vacuums, or water dispensers.  Spring is also the best time to check on the condition of the exterior of your home.  Walk the perimeter of your home carefully examining the stucco for cracks or other problem areas.  Also inspect the trim and any other wood on your home for cracks, peeling paint, etc.  Fixing these problems sooner rather than later could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the long run.  You will be preventing further damage by the elements, animals, and/or bugs.  While you are outside examining your home, you might want to take the opportunity to care for your lawn as well.  Enjoy the sunshine as you fertilize your grass, plant your new springtime flowers, and trim your hedges.

There are also simple things you can do for the interior of your home.  For example, cleaning your carpets is an easy way to freshen up your home without breaking your wallet.  Take an afternoon to clean out all the closets in your home and donate every thing you no longer need to charity.  You can even make this a family affair.  If you are feeling particularly brave, you could even tackle that garage!  Or perhaps you just want to rearrange your furniture for a fresh new look.  Make careful note of any scrapes, holes, or scuff marks for paint touch-ups later.

If you find yourself still looking for a more freshened feel, you might consider adding new architectural touches around the home.  Crown molding and chair rails will give your room a fresh new feel fairly inexpensively.  You could even try adding decorative molding around doors, or painting a few accent walls around the home for a splash of springtime color.  Whatever you do to celebrate spring’s arrival, be creative and have fun!
