Whether you are a professional photographer or professional mom, photographing children is a challenge.  They move fast, they are small and they are not the best listeners!  Oh and they love putting their sticky fingers right on the lens, but even with all the hazards, photographing children is a blast!  Here our some of our top tips to make photographing your children a little easier.

Top Timbuktu Tips:

Get Really Close — It’s great to have a full frame of that gorgeous face.  Moving in close to your subject eliminates the background, which can be distracting at times.  The image is now all about your kids making the photo really special.

Another approach to getting really closer is to zoom all the way out on your point and shoot and then move in close to your subject.  This will create a bit of a wide-angle look – everything in the foreground like faces or hands appear exaggerated. This is a fun trick that will make your pictures pop.

Unusual Angles and Cropping — That adorable nose, those big saucer eyes and sweet little lips can look even cuter by changing the angle you are at or the way you are framing the image. Be creative. Shoot from your child’s perspective – get down low and shoot up at them. Move in tight getting just their feet, eyes or even belly.  Don’t be afraid to express your artistic side.

Make it a Game — Red light, green light is a great one as well as Simon says.  Incorporating games into your picture taking makes it fun and will evoke a genuine smile from your kids more than just saying, “Cheese!”

Take a Lot of Pictures — I mean a lot, fire away. Most of you have a digital camera so use it!  Get up high — get down low and shoot, shoot, shoot!

Don’t wait for Special Occasions — Have your camera always ready.  Everyday life images sometimes are better, no stress on you or the kids.  If you are going to have a special day, with a special outfit, shoot a portrait the day before so you are not under pressure on that special day.
