Most of us are anxious when it comes to choosing color for our homes, especially when dealing with the exterior. Painting the exterior of your home is one of the most intimate things one does in public. It is like wearing your heart on your sleeve for the entire neighborhood to critique. Those passing by are typically curious as toâ¯how much of the exterior echoes into the privacy of the interior.
A well-chosen palette can enhanceâ¯your home, and give balance as it highlights its architectural details. This in turn plays up its strengths and can overcome its weaknesses, as well as provide protection to the structure. One thing to consider while choosing exterior colors is the statement you want to make. You obviously want your home to feel welcoming and have curb appeal, yet you want it to represent who you are to those who pass by. Still, you must consider your surrounding environment and the constraints it may place on your decision such as weather conditions, or a desire to be faithful to a home’s period and style. For many there are also neighborhood design constraints and Home Owners Association’s that will play a part in color choice.
Another thing to consider is the presence of light. Unlike interior color, exterior color is strongly affected by the natural lighting conditions, which are constantly changing. Light is a powerful influence as it augments what is beautiful, and can even bestow great beauty on that which is insignificant. There is also the landscaping to consider, which complements the palette of colors in many ways. A garden can be highly suggestive, inviting and provocative, implying favored colors, a signature of what is to come, when you cross the home threshold and enter inside. Unenclosed as it may be, it shares many features of the habitable interior. Its paths and trees are, at once almost literally and quite metaphorically, pathways and pieces of furniture, its lawns are carpets, its shrubs décor.
All in all, exterior color selection becomes aâ¯complex equation when you consider these elements. You must account for quality paint and workmanship when re-painting the exterior, as it is not a project one intends on undertaking too frequently. Our homes are one of our greatest investments, emotionally and figuratively and we want to love the colors we live with.
