Well, our first annual Bowl-a-thon is completed and what a success it was.  The turnout from the community was just overwhelming and the amount of money raised for the first time was just awesome.  Don’t have all the figurers yet but somewhere in the neighbor of $14,000 will be turned over to Heads Up Ranch.  Our thanks to all the many sponsors and participants that helped make this event the wonderful venue it turned out to be.  A special thanks to Mike Holt for his leadership and vision as the 2006-2007 Bowl-a-thon chairperson and his committee of volunteers. Recently we had the pleasure of welcoming Joanne and Bob Lombardi of Lombardi Farms and Nancy Roatcap of Nancy’s Tree Ranch to our club meeting.  They were treated to dinner and each received a beautiful plaque thanking them for their continued help and service not only to us but, also to the entire Santa Clarita Community.  Each in their own right has played a very important part with our Halloween fundraising and our Santa’s Magic programs.  On behalf of the S.C.V. Newhall Optimist Club, once again we say thank you and keep up the good work. Next month I will announce the results of the essay contest that we are sponsoring through Optimist International and a special thanks to Pauline Nosserman at the College of the Academy High School for her help in getting this contest off the ground at the school.  We have over 30 essays turned in for consideration. Our oratorical contest is in full swing as well and as soon as the results are in we will advise you of those.  This contest is open to students under the age of 16 and attending middle schools in the area. Our Junior Optimist club, which is composed of students at La Mesa Middle school, is conducting their first clothing and shoe drive.  If you are interested in donating items for this, contact Dee Gadbury at 661-252-7313.  The Junior Optimist club of La Mesa is made of students in the seventh and eighth grade that attend school at La Mesa, under the wonderful direction of two teachers, Ms. Menard and Mr. Anonsky and have their own officers and board of directors.  They meet once a month during lunch and have done several service and fundraising functions this past year. Until next month, Yours in optimism. Image
