On March 24, the local AAUW branch held its annual math/science conference.  It was a huge success.  It was fully subscribed two weeks before the conference date.  It offered twenty hands-on workshops presented by professional women in various fields of math, science and technology to seventh and eighth grade students.

In the past years it has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm of our local students for this opportunity.  The workshops have covered topics such as earthquakes, budgeting in the film industry, space exploration, the human brain, animal care and DNA.

The adult program was also very well attended.  Hopefully it was helpful to parents of children of all ages in planning for higher education, how to fund it and how to continue to encourage students to take advantage of all that our schools offer them.  Thank you all for participating.  Also many thanks to the speakers from College of the Canyons and the Hart District that made this segment of the conference possible.

The local branch would like to thank all the presenters of the above workshops for donating their time and expertise in encouraging the young women of our valley to continue their enthusiasm for the math, science and technology areas and the future career opportunities explored.  We also wish to thank our local branch volunteers for their time and effort towards making this conference a success.

AAUW Santa Clarita Branch would like to publicly thank Robert Gore Rifkind for his large donations to support our conferences the last few years.  Rifkind is a major donor to music and art programs in the LA area.  He is also a major collector of German expressionist artwork.  We are so happy to be the recipient of his encouraging support to many areas of public educational programs.

AAUW would also like to thank all the local donors of both funds, products and services.  This conference is dependent on the backing of the entire Santa Clarita Valley community.

This advanced study in the math and science disciplines emphasizes the wide range of possibilities open to all our young women.

Again, we thank all of the sponsors and volunteers who make this annual conference possible.
