Summer is here and once again parents are faced with the task of finding fun things to do for their kids.  If your children love taking pictures Timbuktu Studios has a few ideas that we think would be fun and fairly inexpensive.  Here are our top five favorite kid photo projects for the summer.

Image1.  Going to the Zoo or taking a trip to the Grand Canyon?  Have your kids document the day or the trip and create a photo album.  With digital cameras you can download the pictures right to the computer and create a photo album right online.  There are great online companies that do this at a very inexpensive rate, Kodak.com, Piccabo.com and MyPublisher.com to name a few.  Your kids can create simple photo albums or they can tell a story along with their photos or even make a reference book of all the animals or places they have seen.  Once the album is created online, it will be printed and shipped to you at the click of a button.

2.  Do a photo scavenger hunt.  Scavenger hunts are always so much fun for kids.  Now they can do it with photos.  Make a list of things for your children to find and photograph.  You can do all sorts of things from objects in the house, to things found outside or even around the neighborhood.

3. Give the kids weekly photo assignments.  Take a jar and write down interesting little assignments the kids can photograph, for instance, shooting from “a cat’s eye view” or “a bird’s eye view,” pick a friend or family member and shoot “a day in the life of” or even a practice in self portraits “How I see myself.”  Let the kids pick from the jar and do the assignment.  At the end of the week gather the whole family together for popcorn and a slide show of the images done that week.

4. Do a photo puzzle.  Let your child pick his or her favorite photo and make a puzzle.  Compoazpuzzle.com sells blank puzzles that will print from your computer or you can check out the activity center at hp.com to download a photo template and instructions for your child to make his or her own puzzle.

5. Make a photo collage.  Print out all your kid’s favorite photos off your printer and allow the kids to cut and paste them to construction paper or foam core creating a collage.  The collage can tell a story and even be incorporated with other materials such as trinkets and nature they have collected, buttons and beads, construction paper shapes, or it can simply be about the photos.

Here at Timbuktu Studios we like to encourage kids and families to have fun exploring the world of photography.  We hope that our tips will be helpful to ensuring a summer filled with fun for the whole family.  Check out our kids photo club and many other classes at t2learning.com .
