The Holidays At Santa Clarita United Methodist Church

Advent and Christmas marks the beginning – the start of a new calendar year for Christians and the start of discovering or rediscovering the power of God reaching out to a hurting world in a loving embrace that is the Christ child. Often we sanitize or domesticate the powerful work of God through Jesus. We sing sweet songs of Mary and Joseph bringing Jesus into the world, we sing of the heavens opening up to pour forth messages of God’s self-reveling love through Angels, Shepherds and a baby. This mighty message of God is anything but ordinary or just the same old way of living, this is God extending and working to draw us into the circle of the divine presence through offering us life.
To prepare for such an event as Christmas, receiving God through the baby Jesus, we do Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, preparing our hearts and lives to receive the love of God. Through Sunday worship celebrations, through special events we step into a spiritual space filled with the amazing presence of God. In that spiritual space we discover the nature of God and ponder the ways God extends and works to draw us into the circle of love. When Christ was born into the world to live as one of us, God worked a new meaning into the lives of all humanity and all creation. With the advent of God being a human in Christ’s birth; God brought Hope to a world that longs for goodness to overcome the bad and painful, God brought Peace into a world where strife and division destroyed lives, God brought Joy where despair covered the land and people’s hearts, God brought Love into a world where hate and loneliness drove people to hurt those around them. It really does seem this year we could use what God wants us to have on Christmas.
December 3, Christmas means Hope
December 10, Christmas means Peace
December 17, Christmas means Joy
December 24, Christmas means Love
