Take a slow deep breath and let it out very gently.  Do it again.  Notice the difference?  Being aware of your breathing and following some easy guidance can do so much to help people heal.  Today, a holistic approach to healing includes a thorough awareness of how our minds enhance our recovery process.  The guests at weSPARK Cancer Support Center know that stress compounds their healing and compromises their immune systems; it can actually impede their body’s natural desire to heal.  Although, our culture emphasizes the skill of multi-tasking and values productivity, somewhere along the way, many of us have forgotten that we are internally wise and that if we pay attention to our intuition, we can find strength to get through difficult moments.

Your breath is a wonderful tool for keeping you focused and for reducing anxiety.  It is physically impossible to hold onto anxiety while you are gently breathing.  When stress occurs, whether you receive bad news or are disappointed by life, remember that right now, at this very moment, you are safe.  Rather than worrying about what to do, breathe gently and focus, not on the future, but what you can do right now to take care of yourself in this very moment.  Your breath is always there as a tool.  Focus on your breath and let it be a coping skill for you.  Allow your gentle breathing to induce feelings of relaxation and wellness.  Breathe deeply and think of things that you can do to help you feel calm and safe right now.

There is a deep inner part of you, let’s call it your basic integrity, that can help you stay in the present moment and value it.  The stressful information you receive does not change who you are inside nor does it alter your connections with the people in your life.  Breathe deeply and tell yourself, “I am okay.”  Your breath is a very powerful tool.
