Are you talking to yourself while you drive? It might look that way, since the new Wireless Telephone Law went into effect on July 1. This law prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while driving a motor vehicle. Motorists 18 and over may use a “hands-free device.” Drivers under the age of 18 may not use a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle.
It’s always safer to have both hands on the wheel and to avoid distractions. A recent survey revealed that more than 41 percent of drivers use their cell phone while driving. But, with this new law in effect, without using a hands-free device, you could end up on the side of the road talking with a policeman – leaving with a ticket and a fine.
The base fine for the first offence is $20 and $50 for subsequent convictions. With the addition of penalty assessments, the fines can be more than triple the base fine amount.
In order to comply with the new law, drivers are allowed to either use an earpiece or a Bluetooth speaker phone function.
A few years ago, Bluetooth became a standard or optional feature hard-wired into many new cars. If your car doesn’t have this feature, you are allowed to use either an earpiece or an after market Bluetooth speaker phone function.
Wired earpieces can be cumbersome, uncomfortable and distracting, especially after many hours of use. Hard-wiring your car with Bluetooth is a more expensive option.
One of the most exciting new hands-free options available is the “Supertooth 3 – Bluetooth Handsfree” speakerphone available at Keyes Lexus of Valencia. It has many of the features of a hard-wired system for only slightly more than an earpiece!
Supertooth 3 is the world’s first sun-visor mounted, handsfree speakerphone that not only announces the caller’s name or number, but allows the user to answer the call simply by saying ‘OK.’
Other Supertooth 3 features include:
• Uploads the cell phone’s address book to automatically announce the caller’s name or number
• Supports voice dial activation, redial and call reject (subject to cell phone support)
• World class Digital Signal Pro (DSP) for exceptional noise and echo cancellation
• Pairs with up to eight Bluetooth devices
Because you simply clip the device to your sun-visor, there are no installation requirements. And, it comes with a rechargeable battery that provides up to 15 hours talk-time or 800 hours stand-by. It comes with a car and wall charger and two sun-visor clips. Charge it up and you’re ready to go!
Make sure you obey the law – and use logic when driving and phoning.
