In March of 2003 installations of self-regenerating water softeners were banned in the Santa Clarita Valley for homes connected to the sewer, to reduce chloride levels in the Santa Clara River as required by the State of California. To minimize future rate increases for the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley, the Sanitation District, adopted an ordinance requiring the removal of and providing a compensation program for, all installed residential “Salt-Based” self-regenerating water softeners.
On November 4, 2008, Santa Clarita Valley residents will be voting on whether to permanently ban residential “Salt Based” water softeners.
The Sanitation District is still offering rebates to homeowners who are interested in exchanging their salt water softeners for an approved alternative, or eliminating the salt water softener from their home all together.
For more information about the rebate program, visit the Sanitation District website www.lacsd.org/chloride or call 1-877-CUT-SALT or contact Santa Clarita Water Conditioning at 661-259-1536.
