Summer is over and school is here! With some planning and organizing, the change from summer schedules to school schedules can go smoothly and without stress. Here are some tips for middle to upper grade students and parents.
Parents:
• Set up a “school center” where all things related to your children’s school will be located. Use a portable file box with folders divided into categories such as: School Directory; Calendar; Forms, Medical Information, etc. Have a few files for each child’s homework, special notes or other categories necessary.
• Teach your children basic sorting skills so every day they can put papers from their backpacks into files labeled “Need to be signed,” “Notes from the teacher”, and “Important stuff for Mom” (like PTA notices, school policies, etc.). Work with your children to create a system that works for you and them. It will not happen by itself.
• Set up a “study area” that is organized, clutter free and inviting to work in. Designate a consistent block of time for homework without distractions.
• Keep only one calendar of events handy where everyone can see it and will know what’s happening and when.
• Encourage your child to use a daily planner to track his own time and activities. This promotes good time management skills.

Students:
• Create separate folders for each subject. This eliminates mixing up papers from two different classes. Title each clearly on the front.
• Three-ring binders should be clearly divided by subject using tab dividers for quick, easy reference. Insert clear sheet protectors in each section for important assignments and completed work.
• Separate working papers (on going projects, term papers and current homework) from completed assignments. For graded and returned homework you are keeping, start a separate archive folder or notebook.
• As the year progresses, avoid overstuffing your folders and notebooks. Cramming as much as possible into a single folder/binder will lead to confusion and loss of important papers. Create an “archive/reference” folder for completed assignments. And, don’t forget to regularly back up the assignments you have on the computer!
