You have heard about chiropractors, you probably know someone who has even gone to one. You have probably heard the rumors and dogma associated with chiropractors as well. Well let’s talk about these rumors and set the record straight. Many of my patients who finally come in for treatment of some nagging pain will say, “I heard once you go to a chiropractor you always have to go.” This one always gives me a chuckle, what compelling force makes you “have” to return? The reason people come back is that they now know they do not have to suffer in pain, they do not have to take all those pills to get rid of it. They know how good their back or neck can feel, and when it doesn’t feel good they return.
What about “They crack your bones.” That’s another good one. There is a sound associated with an adjustment, a pop or a crack, that is just air leaving the joint as we mobilize or adjust it. We do not crack bones, we re-align joints and re-establish proper movement patterns, thereby decreasing the irritation that the misaligned joints are causing on the surrounding tissues, primarily the nerves. Think of it this way, we all drive cars, and we all know what happens if you drive a car when the front tires are misaligned. The car still works, it may pull to the right or left, but it still drives. If your joints are misaligned, you still function, but you may have a nagging pain in your lower back or neck, maybe some tingling down your arms or legs, or just that constant tightness in your upper back and between your shoulder blades. Well if you keep driving on those tires you will see some very uneven wear and tear with one side of the tire worn out and the other looks fine. If that is your joint, you will get uneven wear and tear as well causing early degenerative changes. These changes get worse the longer the problem exists, just like driving too long on misaligned tires. Just as you have heard all these rumors, you also probably know someone who has gone to a chiropractor and have had great results.
