Tai Chi is a slow motion application of the martial art Kung Fu. Instead of directing the life force energy out as one would do in combat, Tai Chi draws energy in. When properly followed, the “moving meditation” is characterized by slow and gentle flowing movements. At the beginning of the class, participants clear their minds, a task easier said than done. Upon deep concentration on a singular movement, the class members become deeply involved (the meditative part) and very aware of their body parts, to the exclusion of all else. This helps open the energy channels so that energy can travel freely through the body.
The benefits of Tai Chi include stress reduction, increased balance and coordination, improved focus and concentration, improved circulation (the movements are meant to massage internal organs which pumps more oxygen into vital organs), and the promotion of relaxation and well-being. Doing Tai Chi increases the flow of synovial fluid which lubricates joints and helps reduce pain. Although, Tai Chi does not cure diseases like cancer, patients who practice tai chi tend to remain stable (not getting worse) and feel better as a result of doing this meditative exercise.
As for the guests at weSPARK, they will tell you that when class is finished they experience less stress and anxiety, improved concentration and are able to forget about their cancer for awhile. Recently, a guest in Sherman Oaks said, “Tai Chi saved my life and I’d be a vegetable without it.”
