We all know that being a good listener is a great asset, but how well do we listen to ourselves? Do you listen to your body? Our bodies are constantly communicating with our minds. We feel tired, anxious, have headaches, insomnia, intestinal bloating, mental fog, menstrual cramps, hot flashes, back and joint pains and more, yet we “push on” with the seemingly important details of our lives.
Listening to our bodies requires being connected to them. Many of us are not really connected to our bodies. We may not think of them in a holistic way and instead break them into parts such as “a stomach,” a “back,” “sinuses” or any other body part.
Our bodies are miraculous organisms magnificently created, constantly giving us feedback about what we are and are not doing. We get feedback about our relationships, hormonal balance heart function, weight and amount of inflammation. Inflammation is the beginning of disease. If we don’t listen and make changes, disease may come knocking at our door.
Spending quiet time alone is important to create a pathway for “body communication” to become stronger. If our lives are constantly full of activity and other people, we won’t have much of an opportunity to create a deep relationship with ourselves to even begin to “hear” what our bodies are saying.
All of us “slip,” we eat or drink too much, sleep too little, or let our negativity run wild and start to control us. Listen, your body is talking to you. It’s just not speaking English so it might take some practice to understand what it is saying and the language it speaks. Listening and being aware, conscious and connected to our physical bodies is the first step. And all journeys begin with the first step.
