All of us, at one time or another, have had to face the challenge of what to give an aging loved one. With the holidays just around the corner, finding an inexpensive, yet meaningful gift just requires some creative thinking!
Most of us delight in the holidays because we are surrounded by our families. Many seniors’ loved ones are deceased or have moved away. The holidays to them may be a series of lovely cards or maybe some local carolers. Probably the most important gift you could give is your presence. A visit is always welcome to someone who doesn’t get out much. If you feel you can’t afford the cost of travel, or time off from work, consider taking whatever money you would spend on a gift and put it toward a day, or a few hours off from work if necessary to travel.
A photo collage of the family members in a scrapbook is another great gift idea. Don’t choose posed photos, but the silly informal ones! Use word balloons. That way your family member can feel like he or she is a part of your family’s activities.
This is also the perfect time for giving a new calendar. Add a personal touch by writing in all birthdays, anniversaries and other important dates you know they would like.
Music makes a great gift also! An MP3 or IPod is a wonderful gift for a senior citizen. The little ear buds fit directly into the ear just like a hearing aid. You can pre-load their favorite music, and if they want a change of pace, simply load in some different music. The whole family could chip in on the player, and music downloads if necessary Gift cards are a convenient and easy way to give. You can purchase cards at grocery stores, restaurants, phone companies, utility companies, pharmacies, beauty and barber shops. These are great for people on a limited income.
Don’t forget about subscriptions to newspapers and magazines. If they live in a different place, they might enjoy getting their hometown paper for a change.
Gift giving to seniors doesn’t have to be difficult! Forget the usual shirt, tie or slippers. They already have them. Instead give them love, thoughtfulness and convenience, and most of all, yourself!
