With Halloween around the corner be very careful; witches, black cats, and goblins aren’t the only things lurking in the dark. Beware of the hypercholesterolemia monster a.k.a. high cholesterol! He’s mean, he’s green, and – he’s a fraud.
But cholesterol is bad. And it causes heart disease.  No, actually there’s no direct correlation between total cholesterol and heart disease.  Oxidized cholesterol is the real culprit, which comes primarily from polyunsaturated fats, refined carbohydrates, and simple sugars.  In fact in recent studies on elderly patients, those who felt best and lived longest had the highest cholesterol.

Unfortunately the government, pharmaceutical companies, and media have worked together to push this 21st century disease on us and convince us we need treatment.  For example, take a look at the parameters for cholesterol levels.  Over the years they’ve continued to drop and are still doing so without necessity. As a result perfectly healthy people, including school children, are being “diagnosed” with this disease and lining the pockets of pharmaceutical companies.

Every cell membrane in our bodies is made up of cholesterol; it makes them waterproof.  Take cholesterol away and you can create a leaky cell membrane which will ultimately cause serious health problems (which we’ll explore later). In our brains cholesterol plays a key role in the formation of memory and uptake of hormones, especially serotonin and sex hormones.  Neurological function, muscle function (the heart’s a muscle), ability to heal, and digestion of fats are all largely dependent on cholesterol.  In addition, cholesterol creates a balance for the body’s tendency toward inflammation and acts as a powerful antioxidant protecting us against cancer and aging.  As you can see, our bodies don’t stand a chance without cholesterol.

What all of this boils down to is the fact that hypercholesterolemia is a contrived disease.  I’m not advocating that you dismiss what your doctor might have told you but I am advocating awareness.  Research the matter, surf the web to find others who have experienced these drugs first hand, and make an informed decision about your cholesterol.  At Women’s Health Advantage we’ll help you discover your unique needs and assist you in making informed decisions about your health.

Don’t miss next month’s article where we’ll expose the devastating, sometimes deadly, effects of the most popular treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
