Even as temperatures begin to cool, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a dip in the pool. It’s easy to let the day’s stresses melt away as you effortlessly move through the cool, blue water. But as you’re splashing around, do you ever think about what’s in the water? From E. coli to Cryptosporidium parvum, a pool not properly cared for can be overwhelmed by unwanted intruders.
“Whether it’s your local community pool or one in your own backyard, chlorine is not enough to kill some of the bugs that get in the water,” said Beth Hamil of DEL Ozone, a California-based manufacturer of ozone generators. “Ozone has been proven to eliminate more than 99.9 percent of bacteria including Crypto, E. coli and Pseudomonas.”
Though any bacteria in the water can be harmful, outbreaks of Crypto have had a stranglehold on the commercial pool industry this summer with hundreds of reported cases and numerous facility closures. What makes ozone so powerful is that, unlike with chlorine, Crypto cannot become immune to ozone.
“When ozone enters the water, it immediately begins killing the Crypto and it kills on contact. Once its work is done, the only by-product left behind is oxygen,” said Hamil.
Ozone will also free the water of chloramines, created by the combination of chlorine and organic material, such as body oils. Chloramines can cause skin irritations and illness and create the harsh chlorine smell often found lurking around swimming pools.
But despite its power, ozone is extremely safe. Not only is it environmentally friendly but it’s also an EPA-approved antimicrobial disinfectant, an FDA-approved antimicrobial food additive and a USDA-approved organic food additive.
“People often think about what goes into their food but they should have the same concerns over the quality of the water they swim in,” said Hamil. “Ozone is the only sanitizer for your pool that is 100 percent natural and biodegradable.”
