It’s January, and I’m sure many of you have made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight.  Let me tell you — there is a right way and a wrong way.  Most people choose the wrong way: a severe, overnight reduction in calories along with low-intensity aerobic exercise.  Most of the time, these programs not only fail, but end up leaving you fatter than when you started.  The wrong way starts with the wrong goal — losing weight.  When you think about it, you really just want to lose fat.  Weight is just a symptom of the problem.  In order to lose fat, you have to eat and exercise right.
I covered eating right in my article last August.  Basically you should eat five to six small meals per day consisting of about 40 percent carbohydrates (good carbs), 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat.  Emphasize meats and vegetables and stay away from sugar, particularly soda.  As for exercise, increasing your strength and muscle mass through resistance training is a must.  Use your own bodyweight along with free weights; don’t use machines.  Also, do your resistance training before your aerobic exercise.

I know this advice is unconventional, and, unfortunately, I can’t go into detail in this short article.  Luckily, we have excellent resources right here in the SCV.  Alwyn Cosgrove, owner of Results Fitness in Newhall, has collaborated on two books including The New Rules of Lifting for Women.  Robert dos Remedios, strength coach at College of the Canyons, has written Men’s Health Power Training.  Mr. Cosgrove covers this topic end-to-end, while Mr. dos Remedios presents a large menu of exercises and workouts.
