Well we have been busy this last month and as promised I am glad to announce the winners of the essay contest held recently.
We received over 30 essays from High School of the Academies plus one from Saugus and Hart High School. First place went to Brianna Brown of Hart High School, 2nd place to Jennifer Swann and 3rd place to Emily Torrens of High School of the Academies. Congratulations on a great job. Since this was the first step towards the $6,000 scholarship we will keep you posted in the next issue on the final outcome of the contest.
Thanks to the consistent help and guidance from two of La Mesa’s finest teachers, Leslie Conners and Rick Pardee, our annual Oratorical contest went off without a hitch. We had seven girls and four boys participate and they each in their own right were winners. Coming in first place for the girls was Julia Wong and coming in for the boys in first place was Connor Pratt. Both of these fine students did an outstanding job, unfortunately they did not move up to the next level. But they along with the other participants will be able to once again compete in next year’s contest. Our Junior Optimist club under the direction of their new club president Kyungwon Lee had undertaken the task of sponsoring a clothing and shoe drive, which is being held at La Mesa Middle School. They are asking for clothes and shoes for adults, children and babies. They should be in good condition and clean and these items will be donated to our local Domestic Violence Shelter. Several members of the club will be attending the Junior Optimist Convention in Oxnard at the end of this month where they will meet and be greeted by other students from all over the San Fernando and Los Angeles areas.
In next month’s issue I will share with you some highlights of our annual Blind Youth Track and Field Olympics that took place at the end of April and will share with you the incoming officers and Board of Directors for the year 2007-2008. On a personal note I do want to share some good news with our friends in the community regarding my husband Mike’s condition. Recently he had a cat scan and it was revealed that one of his tumors was now invisible and the other two have been shrunk by almost 50 percent, so yes it seems as if his treatment worked. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Until next month,
