The Persian New Year (or Norouz, which literally translates to “new day” in Farsi) takes place on the first day of spring, and is celebrated by Iranians all over the world. In Santa Clarita, the owners of Mom & Pop’s International Market and Persia Restaurant hosted a lavish dinner party to celebrate the New Year. Iranian families and friends across Southern California came out to Robinson Ranch on Friday, March 20, 2009 to enjoy a spread of classic Iranian foods and desserts, and to dance the night away alongside belly dancers and live music.
Norouz is widely known as a joyous cultural occasion, marking the rebirth of nature. Iranians decorate their homes with fresh spring flowers such as hyacinths and tulips. Iranian families also decorate an intricate Haft-Sin table, which includes seven specific items that begin with the letter “S” and individually symbolize love, health, prosperity, patience, and other values. Every year, Santa Clarita Iranians enthusiastically welcome friends from all different cultures to join them in celebrating the festivities.
